Amira Martin, LCSW-R is on a mission to significantly contribute to the healing of the Black Indigenous and People Of Color (BIPOC) community while simultaneously creating a strong collective of Black and Brown healers and aiding in their professional growth and ongoing contribution to the mental health field.
As part of her mission, she also provides speaking, training, workshops and coaching for organizations and individuals interested in improving their skill set, understanding of and services to the BIPOC community.
Amira started MA Therapy, LLC in October of 2011, MA Therapy has multiple divisions which focus on three areas: Inclusive Mental Health Care, Professional Speakers, Workshop Leaders and Trainers, and Private Practice Coaching and Development for therapists interested in starting or further developing their own private practice. MA Therapy currently employs over sixty clinicians, speakers and coaches and provides just under a thousand therapy sessions per month to clients. We also contract with organizations in need of mental health care for their client base and staff.
Amira was recently recognized for her personal resilience and professional activism in interviews by “The Amsterdam News”, one of the oldest and most well respected Black owned newspapers in NYC in articles “Amira Crawford - A Story of Resilience” and “Amira Crawford- Juggling Mental Health and Activism” in 2020.
Amira served as a Director with The Jewish Board beginning in 2012. During her work with The Jewish Board, she led the Brooklyn People of Color Group, as well as the Brooklyn MSW Student Group. This involved group discussion and workshops on a weekly basis centered on issues of race and racism and their impact on clinicians and clients alike. Amira was also part of a team of clinicians that worked with the agency to create and facilitate an agency wide workshop focused on the continuum of racial and ethnic groups represented within the Jewish Community. Jewish religion, culture, colorism and racism was explored from Ethiopia, Spain, the U.S., Israel, and other parts of the world, with a focus on the meaning and impact of race within the Jewish community.
Amira became the Clinical Director of BMH Consulting in Brooklyn, NY in 2010. BMH is a mental health clinic serving clients living and working in the historically Black neighborhoods of Flatbush, Brownsville and Bedford Stuyvesant communities in Brooklyn, NYC. In that role she provided interactive and educational workshops, and supervision and training for LCSW and LMSW staff on client engagement.
In 2005, with Westchester Jewish Community Services. Amira was the Co-Chair of the WJCS agency wide Diversity Committee. She co-developed and co-taught an agency sponsored course “Race and Diversity” training clinical staff to engage BIPOC clients more effectively in therapy.
